A transparent mouse prototype

Henry Plain appears to be attempting to sell his collection. This time, a mouse is up for sale ($1,875). It’s a transparent DE-9 mouse (using quadrature encoding), a gimmick commonly used for Apple prototypes in the 1980s.

A Power Mac 9700

Seen on eBay (again), a Power Mac 9700. This Mac model, intended to succeed the Power Mac 9600, either utilized a PowerPC G3 CPU or two PowerPC 604e CPUs and integrated six PCI expansion slots. The machine never made it to market, being replaced by the first Power Mac G3. I had previously discussed this model, whose release was canceled around the time of Steve Jobs’ return to Apple.

Seen on eBay, a prototype of the Quadra 800 – a model dating back to 1993 – with a motherboard validated at 40 MHz whereas the commercial version’s 68040 did not exceed 33 MHz. This motherboard, code-named « Wombat », contains a prototype ROM and 8 MB of RAM. The seller has installed the motherboard in a classic Quadra 800 case and is selling the whole unit for $500.

A prototype of a white PowerBook

Seen on a forum, by Henry Plain, a prototype of a white PowerBook, at least in part. It somewhat resembles the PowerBook 170 seen at Guillaume Gete’s site at one point. Sometimes referred to, without valid reasons, as « The 10th Anniversary Mac. »
