A development board for the iPhone 3G

Today, a somewhat unique prototype: it’s the development board of the iPhone 3G (N82) in the Engineering Verification Test (EVT) stage. The photo was sent to me by a contact who specifies that it’s roughly the size of an A4 sheet, so it’s really just for testing the components.

A prototype of an iPhone 5

Seen at Henry Plain (and on eBay), a prototype of the iPhone 5 that boots under SwitchBoard, the testing OS, and in verbose mode. The flash is different from a retail model.

A prototype of an ImageWriter II

Whether it’s a prototype or a ‘special’ version, this ImageWriter II printer, seen at Henry Plain’s, has a unique charm. Transparent like many old prototypes, it should even work under Mac OS X.

A prototype of a Power Mac G4 Cube

Seen (again) on CubeOwner, a prototype of the Power Mac G4 Cube. Like many prototypes, it has a speaker, which is not present in the commercial versions.

Another Apple Interactive Television Box

Seen on eBay, a surprising item: an Apple TV box with a video card. Typically, it only has a composite output (European versions with a SCART connector are rare; if you have one, I’m interested), but here we have a graphics card with a DA-15 output, i.e., a two-row connector. With an adapter, it works on a modern display, but obviously, it doesn’t boot.

A prototype of an Apple Studio Display with a Power Mac G4

Seen on eBay, a prototype monitor (advertised as a 17-inch, but the marking indicates it’s a 15-inch) with a Power Mac G4. There is no indication that the Mac itself is a prototype, however.

A Power Mac 9700 prototype

Spotted on eBay, a prototype of the Power Mac 9700. This time, it really looks like a Power Mac 9700, complete with six expansion slots. The machine is being sold at a « symbolic » price: $9700.

A transparent Macintosh Portable prototype

Seen on eBay (and quickly sold for $3,600), a prototype of a transparent Macintosh Portable. It is the second generation, featuring a backlit screen, but the machine was sold without a battery and power supply. A beautiful collector’s piece.

A prototype of an iPhone 5

Seen at Henry’s, a prototype of the iPhone 5 running a test OS that I had never seen before, more rudimentary than the typical SwitchBoard. Apparently, it’s an OS designed to truly test a prototype, not just to verify that a model works.

A prototype of an iPhone 6

Seen on LeBonCoin, an iPhone 6 running SwitchBoard, Apple’s test OS. It’s a 16 GB gold model, being sold for the modest sum of €1,500.
