A prototype of a PowerBook G3

Seen on eBay, a prototype (DVT) of the PowerBook G3 Pismo, which is the FireWire model. I don’t see many visible differences from a standard model, apart from the indications explaining that it’s a DVT model (a prototype, therefore).

The Intel Developer Kit (DTK), the first Intel-based Mac

I’ve previously talked several times about the Intel Developer Kit, the first Mac equipped with an Intel processor. And a collector managed to get hold of one of these machines, which is quite surprising given that Apple had retrieved the computers after announcing the first iMac x86 models.

A prototype of a Power Mac G4 QuickSilver

Seen on a forum, an EVT prototype (so not final) of a Power Mac G4. It’s a QuickSilver equipped with two 1 GHz processors, a configuration that was never sold.

A prototype of an iPad mini

Seen on a forum, an iPad mini running SwitchBoard, Apple’s testing operating system. What’s interesting is the presence of icons for testing things like the Mura effect, which had gained attention during the release of the latest iPads…

A prototype of an iPod touch

A photo sent by a reader (I forgot to mention it): a 4th-generation iPod touch running SwitchBoard, Apple’s testing operating system. It’s the system used to test components, sometimes seen on prototypes of iPads, iPhones, and so on.

A prototype of the first iPhone

Seen on eBay, a prototype of the first iPhone. Offered at $4,000, the iPhone is supposed to run Apple’s test OS (SkankPhone) but crashes upon booting. The device itself looks like a standard model with a few inscriptions (no DVT, etc.), and from my experience, it’s possible to install SkankPhone on a commercially available device—let’s talk about that later…

A Mighty Mouse prototype

Seen on eBay, a Mighty Mouse prototype. It sold for nearly $300, even though there’s nothing particularly special about it besides having a DVT indication on the casing.

A prototype of an iPhone 4

Seen on eBay (and regularly seen, though I’m not certain if it’s the same): a prototype of the iPhone 4 with an internal memory of 4 GB, recognized by iTunes as a 5 GB model. It’s quite pricey: starting at $1,400, with a buy-now option of $2,000.

A prototype of an iBook and a prototype of a Power Macintosh G3

Seen on a forum, prototypes of two of my favorite machines: the Power Mac G3 and the iBook G3.

A prototype of a MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo

Seen on eBay, a prototype of the MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo that was previously spotted a few months back. It’s a 17-inch model, a DVT prototype, and it’s fully functional. It’s priced at $3,500, still quite steep.
