Excel beta for Mac

Spotted on eBay, a large stack of Mac floppy disks (around 200) with some interesting finds. Among them, there’s a floppy disk containing a beta version of Excel, a software initially released for Apple’s Macs.

A prototype of an Apple Pro Mouse

Seen on eBay, a prototype of the Apple Pro Mouse. The only difference compared to a regular mouse is apparently the color of the cable, which is white, while the standard versions have a transparent cable.

A prototype of a MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo

Seen on eBay, a prototype of a 17-inch MacBook Pro. Priced at $5,000, it features a green PCB (which is often red on prototypes) and an odd connector, presumably used for a 3G card, although I’m not entirely certain. The machine is functional, which isn’t always the case with prototypes…

A prototype of a dual G4 PowerBook

A reader sent me some photos of a rather astonishing device: a prototype of the PowerBook G4… equipped with two processors. Yes, Apple, before transitioning to Intel processors, evidently intended to offer dual G4 PowerBooks, akin to desktop machines.

A prototype of Apple In-Ear headphones

A fun prototype seen on a forum: Apple’s (fairly average) in-ear headphones. Not the EarPods, the « real » in-ear ones sold for 80 €. Here, like many Apple prototypes, they are transparent.

Apple had planned a dock connector for the Mac mini

I had already mentioned it—the original Mac mini (the G4) contains traces of a dock connector on its internal daughterboard. Until today, not much was known, but I stumbled upon a photo of a Mac mini cover with the said connector.

Another iPad mini prototype running SwitchBoard

Seen on eBay, another iPad mini running SwitchBoard. The screen is shattered, indicating it’s a recent model (given its color). The price is a bit high ($1,000).

A prototype of an iPad mini running SwitchBoard

Seen on eBay: an iPad mini running SwitchBoard, Apple’s testing operating system. What’s unique about it? It’s not a prototype but a model bought commercially on December 27th. Apparently, it wasn’t loaded with the final OS…

A prototype motherboard of an iPad

Seen on eBay, a motherboard for an iPad X. The color indicates it’s an Apple prototype, and the motherboard’s design suggests it’s likely a prototype of the iPad 4 (the Retina with Apple A6X).

A prototype of the Apple Multiserver Delphi

Seen on eBay (if you have $5,000…) an Apple Multiserver. It’s an Apple network storage enclosure, a project initiated in the ’80s but never released.
