The Alpine alpha firmware for iPhone

During my research into Mac OS X beta versions, I came across an alpha version of the original iPhone’s system.

A prototype of a transparent Macintosh SE

Spotted on eBay, a transparent Macintosh SE prototype. It appears to be entirely identical to a standard model except for the casing, which is completely transparent, reminiscent of the iMac design. The price is a bit steep: a starting bid of $20,000 and a buy-it-now option for $35,000.

Resurrection of a Macintosh Twiggy

Fun fact: a prototype Macintosh equipped with a 5.25-inch floppy disk drive (referred to as a Twiggy in Apple’s vocabulary) has been restored. Such devices, whether Lisa or Macintosh, often appear on eBay.

A prototype of an iPad 2

Seen on Flickr, an iPad 2 with the MMI, the operating system used for diagnostics. Apparently, this is the system used to test an iPad before selling it.

A MacBook 3G: the Apple prototype

I had already discussed this previously, but it’s interesting to revisit: Apple apparently tested MacBook Pro 3G models in the 2007/2008 lineup, and remnants of this integration are still present in commercial machines.

A prototype of a black iPhone EDGE

I had already mentioned it, but it seems Apple tested the black version of the iPhone EDGE. Some additional photos are available on Flickr.

A prototype of a PlainTalk microphone

Spotted on eBay, a prototype of a PlainTalk microphone. It’s green, whereas the standard model is gray.

A prototype of a PowerBook G5

Interestingly, while doing some research, I came across an old page on Apple’s website that explains how an American university had… a PowerBook G5.

A prototype of a MacBook Air

Wayne, a hacker, recently acquired a MacBook Air for repair, and surprisingly, this MacBook Air is a prototype. The MacRumors thread provides some information, though it should be taken with a grain of salt.

A prototype of a transparent Newton 110

Spotted on eBay, a Newton 110 in a transparent casing. It is in good condition, sold with a 2 MB memory card, but the price is a bit high: $975.
