A prototype of a cellular MacBook Pro

The prototype of the cellular MacBook Pro holds a few secrets. Firstly, the antenna is detachable: it is placed in a channel along the screen and is magnetic, allowing easy removal. More interestingly, the connector for the SIM card slot appears to be present on commercial machines without being soldered. This is noteworthy because the (vast) majority of internal 3G modems in Mini Card format (PCI-Express) do not include SIM card readers and assume that the computer has one internally.

A prototype of a MacBook Pro 3G

An interesting prototype is currently up for sale on eBay: a MacBook Pro 3G. It’s a MacBook Pro 3,1 (15-inch Santa Rosa) equipped with an internal 3G card and, surprisingly, an antenna integrated directly into the screen casing. This is a prototype, firstly because such a machine was never released, and secondly because it features a red motherboard. The integration appears to be very well done, indicating that Apple had been considering this type of machine for several years; it is a 2007 model (I had the same MacBook Pro). It’s worth noting that Mac OS X has integrated drivers and effective 3G management for quite some time, as I had discussed earlier here.

A prototype of an iPod touch 3G with a camera

The iPod touch 3G is interesting to analyze: it was eagerly awaited with a camera, and strangely, it was launched without one. However, rumors and cases (yes, cases are important) predicted a camera. A prototype offered on eBay proves that this was not unfounded: it is an iPod touch 3G with a camera. In reality, it took until the 4G version to obtain this little accessory, and its quality is (truly) deplorable.

This iPhone is not a Palm

Some photos of iPhone prototypes. And two interesting photos in the continuation.

A prototype of a Power Mac G4 Cube

Prototype of the day: a Power Mac G4 Cube. It’s honestly less sleek than the commercial model…

A prototype of a black MacBook Air

Today, a rather unique prototype: a first-generation MacBook Air with a partially black casing. The computer itself is made of aluminum, but the bottom is black. Quite distinctive.

A prototype of an Apple Mouse

After the MacBook, another beautiful prototype. Because if Apple doesn’t know how to make good mice, Apple knows how to make pretty mice. And this completely transparent mouse, I like it. The final versions are either black or white…

A very raw prototype of a MacBook

A small series of Apple prototypes for the next few days. We start with this MacBook prototype, which was probably designed before the casing design was finalized. An interesting point is that the processor is not the Core Duo from the final version but a Core Solo, a model with a single core.

Houdini, the code name for the Mighty Mouse

A brief look back at the Mighty Mouse, Apple’s first mouse with more than one button. Codenamed Houdini, Apple introduced the first mouse that incorporated… a speaker. The Mighty Mouse indeed has an internal speaker to simulate clicks on the scroll ball and side buttons, while the click of the main button is, of course, physical. I’d like to remind you that, like many Apple mice, it was not well-regarded, with its ball prone to quick dirt buildup.

An iPod touch 5G with a touch button

Leaked photo — therefore inevitably blurry — of an iPod touch 5G with 128GB of internal memory and, most notably, a touch Home button. This will be a change from the current button, which seemingly wasn’t designed for multitasking and its inadvertent double presses.
