Le Gigabit Ethernet du Power Mac G4 Cube

Récemment, j’ai acquis un Power Mac G4 Cube, une machine icônique chez Apple. Et en faisant quelques recherches pour une mise à jour, je me suis rendu compte d’une chose : Apple avait annoncé une option pour de l’Ethernet à 1 gigabit/s mais elle n’est jamais sortie. C’est assez rare de voir ce genre de choses.

Seen on eBay, a prototype of the Power Mac G4 Cube. The machine appears identical to a standard model and is being sold for $1,000. It notably runs Mac OS 9 and has a fair amount of RAM.

A prototype of a Power Mac G4 Cube

Henry, a loyal reader, sent me photos of a prototype of the Power Mac G4 Cube, quite different internally from the final version. Among interesting details, it’s worth noting the presence of an internal speaker (absent in the final model), a standard 5.25-inch optical drive (as opposed to a slim one), and an overclocked processor running at 500 MHz, while the standard model operates at 400 MHz.

Prototypes of several Power Mac G4 Cubes

Spotted on Flickr (again), two prototypes of the Power Mac G4 Cube. I had already talked about one of the two, but the photos are nice. It’s interesting to see the evolution between different versions of the Cube leading up to the final version. It’s worth noting that both prototypes have 400 MHz CPUs, while the final version had at least one with a 450 MHz CPU.
