Si – comme moi – vous avez un PowerBook G3 WallStreet sans batterie de backup, un problème se pose : comment installer Mac OS X ? En effet, par défaut, la machine démarre sur un écran noir.

Si lire un DVD sur un ordinateur semble atypique en 2016, ça n’a pas toujours été le cas. A la fin des années nonante, c’était un argument de vente important et ce n’était pas trivial.

Pretty Damn Quick

Si vous connaissez un peu les anciens PowerBook, vous avez peut-être entendu parler du PowerBook G3 « PDQ », un sigle qui veut dire « Pretty Damn Quick ». Bien évidemment, la rumeur lie ce nom à Steve Jobs…

Spotted on eBay, a piece of a PowerBook G3 prototype. Given the code name (P8), it appears to be a Pismo model, which means it’s the FireWire version. Bidding starts low.

Vu chez Henry Plain, un prototype de PowerBook G3 Kanga (le premier portable en G3, qui n’acceptait pas Mac OS X). La machine est un DVT, avec un clavier argenté assez étonnant.

Un prototype de PowerBook G3

Vu sur eBay, un prototype (DVT) de PowerBook G3 « Pismo », c’est-à-dire le modèle FireWire. Je ne vois pas trop de différences visibles avec un modèle classique, en dehors des indications pour expliquer qu’il s’agit d’un modèle DVT (un prototype, donc).

A prototype of a PowerBook G3

Spotted on eBay, a prototype of the PowerBook ‘Pismo,’ the last of the PowerBooks equipped with a G3 processor (here at 500 MHz). It’s a PVT, essentially a near-final version, and it comes with a 4 GB PATA SSD (essentially a CompactFlash card). And it’s up for sale.
